About Wakefield

Wakefield (2016) is a compelling psychological drama starring Bryan Cranston as Howard Wakefield, a successful Manhattan lawyer who experiences a profound existential crisis. After a particularly stressful day, Howard makes an impulsive decision not to return home to his wife (Jennifer Garner) and twin daughters. Instead, he secretly takes up residence in the attic of his garage, observing his family's life through a small window as they grieve his mysterious disappearance.

Based on E.L. Doctorow's short story (which itself was inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's tale), the film explores themes of identity, freedom, and the societal constructs we inhabit. Director Robin Swicord creates a claustrophobic, introspective atmosphere that perfectly mirrors Howard's mental state. Bryan Cranston delivers a tour-de-force performance, carrying nearly every scene as he narrates his character's increasingly unhinged thoughts and justifications.

The film's strength lies in its examination of what happens when someone voluntarily removes themselves from their assigned roles. As Howard watches his family adapt to life without him, he confronts uncomfortable truths about himself and his relationships. Wakefield offers viewers a thought-provoking character study that questions the nature of happiness and fulfillment in modern life. With its strong central performance and intelligent script, this underrated drama provides a fascinating look at one man's radical experiment in self-discovery.
