When missile technology is used to enhance toy action figures, the toys soon begin to take their battle programming too seriously.

About Small Soldiers

Small Soldiers (1998) is a clever blend of family-friendly adventure and sharp satire that remains entertaining decades after its release. The film follows teenager Alan Abernathy (Gregory Smith) whose family's toy store receives a shipment of revolutionary action figures called the Commando Elite and their adversaries, the Gorgonites. Unbeknownst to everyone, the toys have been equipped with military-grade microprocessors, giving them artificial intelligence and combat programming. What begins as a marketing gimmick quickly escalates into suburban warfare as the toys begin to take their battle directives literally.

Director Joe Dante (Gremlins) brings his signature mix of humor and mild horror to this high-concept premise. The film works remarkably well on multiple levels—children enjoy the spectacle of toys coming to life and engaging in elaborate battles, while adults appreciate the witty commentary on consumerism, militarization, and technology. The voice performances are particularly standout, with Tommy Lee Jones delivering gravel-voiced intensity as Commando Elite leader Chip Hazard, and Frank Langella bringing unexpected pathos to Archer, the noble Gorgonite leader.

The practical effects and early CGI blend seamlessly to create believable toy characters, and the action sequences are inventive and energetic. At its heart, Small Soldiers is about finding courage and questioning authority, wrapped in an exciting package. With its balanced tone, creative execution, and enduring appeal, it's a perfect film to watch for nostalgic fun or family movie night. The 110-minute runtime flies by with constant invention and charm.
